If you are a customer to any of the participating 108 electric and natural gas utilities that operate within the great state of Wisconsin, Focus on Energy has you covered! This program is a state-wide energy efficiency and renewable resource program funded by Wisconsin based utilities. They work with eligible residents and business to help offset the cost of reducing our energy consumption.
This is a really neat program designed to help Wisconsin residents save energy and money while protecting our beautiful environment! And boy, do we have a landscape worth protecting up here in the northern midwest!
Your kit includes your choice of various sized LED light bulbs, high-efficiency showerheads, pipe insulation, and advanced power strips. My husband and I ordered the ‘Focus Fixed Showerhead Pack’ because I am really interested to see how the faucet aerators work.
All of the packs are slightly different to fit whatever needs you might have in your house or apartment. There is something for everyone here, so please check out your options. New in 2018, The Simple Energy Efficiency packs are now available for all rate payers, including you, renters!
A few important details: It will help to have your energy or natural gas bill handy when you sign up for one of these awesome packages. They will ask which utility is your provider and for your account number as verification. If you love the items you receive in the mail, you can look forward to one package per household every three years! I don’t know how anyone remembers a reoccurring three year event but hey, maybe your life is more put together than mine. Isn’t this exciting?!
Why you should order you Focus on Energy Pack
Besides being easy and free, there are a ton of reasons to install these LED and water saving technologies in your home. Here is a list of broad environmental benefits and links to further reading if you are interested:
- Residential LEDs use at least 75% less energy and last 25 times longer than incandescent lighting. The energy efficiency is higher because there very little heat loss from an LED bulb compared to an incandescent. You can feel this difference with your hands next to a lamp. While LED light bulbs may initally, the savings are well documented when you would have to buy 23 incandescent bulbs for every one LED bulb.
- Insulating your hot water pipes will reduce hot loss (aka energy loss) and raise your water temperature by two to four degrees Fahrenheit. This will allow you to lower your water heater temperature settings, saving money and energy. An insulated pipe will conserve 80% more heat and will reduce sweating on cold water pipes.
- Using an advanced power strip prohibits your electronics from drawing power when they are not in use or off and can save up to $200 in yearly energy costs. You may not have known that any plugged in appliance is using energy even if it is turned off. This is often referred to as ‘vampire loads’ and will add cost to your electric bill. Advanced power strips (APS) come in many styles to prevent this unnecessary energy use.
- I wrote this post on water conservation that talks about five things you can do at home to reduce your water consumption. The low flow showerheads and faucet aerators are excellent physical products that will control your water use without you having to think about it! Using less water will also reduce the amount of water your home needs to heat creating an energy cost savings as well!
